The craft of veneering has been in existence since 2700 BC. Egytian hieroglyphics
have been discovered depicting men cutting very thin pieces of wood veneer and applying it to a substrate using rocks to hold
the veneer in place while the glue dried.
Upon close examination it has been learned that much early furniture
was veneered with valuable woods such as ebony and rosewood, and inlaid with other rare materials such as ivory and gold.
King Tut's chair was very finely veneered in ebony!
Our wood carvers employ only traditional hand carving techniques using
many different gouges, knives, and chisels to achieve their fine work. In fact, many of the tools used are handmade by the
carver himself. Making a tool from scratch allows the carver to fashion the steel edge to make the exact type of cut he desires
as well as giving him complete control of the creation of the tool handle which will fit comfortably into his hand. This is
important as a single carving may require several hundred hours to complete.
Together, with the
wood carver, we collaborate to provide the client with an endless realm of possibilities. We can completely create from scratch,
any carving particular to any style or period desired, including original designs. We have also created "waste" carvings to
be used for the casting of metals or composition materials.
Some of the carvings we have done include legs on furniture,
table edges, handles, columns, and decorative mouldings.
Woodturning is a process by which a piece of wood is rotated at
high speed and simultaneously shaped using a variety of different chisel tools. The machine which spins the wood is called
a lathe. With this tool we can create an endless assortment of parts, from staircase balusters to bedposts.
All of our woodturning is done by hand. Nothing is ever bought from stock supplies or mass produced. A custom
part can be designed and produced to exact standards. We also produce special turnings for use as shaving brush handles and
even our own tool handles.
